The Mariners have just been humbled 3-1 by the Rays in a four-match mini-series. In the final match at Tropicana Field last night, they had the chance to win and level the series. But they ended up losing 6-3 on the night, and with that defeat, the series was done.
Not only was it a bad loss against one of the top sides in MLB. A franchise the Mariniers would be measuring themselves against, it has also had an impact at the top of the AL West, where the Mariners are looking to top the table and secure themselves a place in the postseason.
Braves now in control of the AL West
The battle at the top of the AL West has baseball fans all over the world captivated. The Astros, Mariners, and Rangers have been slugging out for weeks now, and still, we don’t know who’s going to win the division.
The Astros are now leading the way, but both the Mariners and the Rangers are still in the fight. This week the Astros start with a series against the Athletics, who sit bottom of the AL West. The Mariners are playing the Angels, who are just one higher.
It’s the Rangers that are the team in danger of dropping out of the race. They face a much more daunting series, away at the Blue Jays, who are 8-2 in their last ten. If the Rangers lose that series 3-0, they are in big trouble.
Betting to win the AL West
So how does this affect the betting to win the AL West? Well, it has been blown wide open lately. Both the Mariners and the Rangers are in the fight for a wild card. But both seem to have hit a patch of poor form at the wrong time.
As a result, the Astros have taken the top spot in the AL West, and they are now in pole position to win the division and take their place in the postseason. In the betting, the Astros are just -400 to win the division.
Overall, it now looks like the sportsbooks are starting to see this as a two-horse race, as the Mariners are second favorites at +375, and the Rangers are now out at a huge looking +1400. And let’s not forget, Bruce Bochy’s side were the betting favorites just a few short weeks ago.
But all hope isn’t lost for the Rangers. In BetOnline’s props betting, they are -130 for yes to make the playoffs and +100 for no. In the same market, the Mariners are yes -270 and no +210.
So even though it would appear that the best MLB World Series betting sites have written off the Rangers’ prospects of winning the division, they still see them as having a roughly 50/50 chance of making the postseason.
Mariners vs. Angels Match Betting
Now onto the match betting. And the best MLB betting sites are favoring Seattle to win the opening match of the series.
After a humbling series defeat to the Rays, the Mariners are -225 to bounce back with a win. The Angels are +185 to inflict a fourth straight loss on Scott Servais’ team.
On the handicap line, the Mariners are +110 to cover the 1.5-point spread. The Angels are -130 to win with the head start. The over/under spread is 7 points. Over 7 is -115, and under 7 is -105.

In their respective last ten fixtures, both franchises are 3-7. The Mariners are 39-29 at home, and the Angels are 32-40 on the road. We already know the Mariners lost their last series 3-1 to the Rays. The Angels have just completed a 3-1 series win over the Guardians. They clinched the series last night with a 2-1 win at the Angel Stadium.
This makes calling this match tricky looking. The Angels come into the fixture in better form, but the Mariners have home advantage and need the win for postseason reasons.
Before their wins over the Guardians, the Angels were in dire form, losing a home series against the Orioles 3-0 and a road trip to the Athletics 3-0. Two of those losses were 9-2 and 10-6.
Despite the excellent series win over the Guardians, with their form from the previous week, it is hard to make a case to back them to beat the Mariners.
